From planning to arrival

Work backwards from a compliant arrival date

This route cannot be reduced to an airline booking. The sequence of identification, vaccination, testing and certification determines the realistic travel window.

1

Movement assessment

We confirm whether the journey can use the non-commercial pet-travel pathway or needs a different entry process.

2

Veterinary timeline

Microchip, rabies vaccination, antibody test and certificate timing are mapped in the correct order.

3

Entry point

The Spanish arrival airport and designated travellers’ point of entry are checked before routing.

4

Travel arrangement

Airline, carrier and accompanied options are assessed for the specific animal and itinerary.

5

Arrival handover

Document checks, owner timing and destination handover are coordinated before departure.

Accompanied travel, when feasible

Accompaniment must fit the legal travel pathway

For a non-commercial movement, the pet travels with its owner or an authorised person, and the owner’s travel must normally fall within the permitted five-day window.

When that relationship does not exist—or when ownership is being transferred—the movement may need to follow different animal-health conditions. UniPetrans reviews the case before proposing a route.

Route-specific preparation

Preparing for Thailand → Spain

A first entry from Thailand generally requires more lead time than movement within the EU. Preparation can include:

  • Microchip before the qualifying rabies vaccination
  • Valid rabies vaccination record
  • Rabies antibody titration by a designated laboratory
  • Required waiting period after the blood sample
  • EU animal health certificate and supporting declaration
  • Arrival through a designated travellers’ point of entry

Thailand is not shown on the current European Commission exemption list for rabies antibody titration. Re-entry of an EU-resident pet may follow a different pathway if a valid favourable test was documented before leaving the EU. Always verify the current official conditions.

Official guidance: European Commission — Bringing a pet into the EU · EU country listing · MAPA — Movement of companion animals.

Frequently asked questions

Thailand → Spain Pet Travel

Does a pet coming from Thailand need a rabies antibody titration test?

Thailand does not appear on the European Commission list of countries exempt from the test. For a first compliant journey, the official process generally includes a blood sample taken at least 30 days after primary rabies vaccination and a waiting period before the health certificate is issued. The current rule must be confirmed for the animal.

Can the owner travel separately from the pet?

For non-commercial movement, an authorised person may travel with the pet when the owner travels within five days before or after it and the required written declaration is provided. If those conditions are not met, a different animal-health pathway applies.

Where is the pet checked on arrival in Spain?

Pets entering from most non-EU countries must use a designated travellers’ point of entry, where documentary and identity checks are performed. The chosen arrival airport must be confirmed in advance.

Can UniPetrans accompany a pet from Thailand to Spain?

Potentially, when the itinerary, airline and legal classification of the movement allow an accompanied arrangement.

Is an EU pet passport issued in Thailand?

For a normal first entry from Thailand, the journey is prepared using the applicable animal health certificate and supporting records. An EU passport is generally obtained later through an authorised veterinarian in the EU.

How early should planning begin?

Begin before choosing a firm flight date. Rabies vaccination, the antibody test, official certification and the waiting period can determine the earliest compliant journey.
