Pet travel from Argentina to the European Union

We coordinate departure from Argentina and entry into the European Union. SENASA procedures, identification, rabies vaccination, the EU certificate or eligible passport and accompanied-flight options are reviewed before booking.

Documents and preparation for entry into the European Union

Departure from Argentina is prepared with SENASA, while EU entry requires its own file. Where a certificate is needed, arrange the CVI using the current EU model and the appropriate official procedure; it must remain valid until document and identity checks, within ten days of issue. An EU passport may be eligible for certain returning pets if it still meets the requirements; Argentina’s departure procedure must also be confirmed.

For travel to the European Union from Argentina, identify the first designated EU entry point and final city. Coordinate the appointment and export document with your vet and SENASA; also confirm whether an EU passport can cover that return.

  • Microchip checked before rabies vaccination and matching identity details across the file.
  • Valid rabies vaccination and at least 21 days after primary vaccination, with dates confirmed by your vet.
  • Veterinary preparation and SENASA export-CVI procedure, including an appointment and documents for the first entry country.
  • Current EU health certificate or eligible return passport, non-commercial declaration and accompanying-person authorisation where applicable.
  • Owner’s travel within the five-day window where applicable, first designated entry point and airline acceptance.

Dogs and cats: individual preparation

Species, breed, age, health and carrier dimensions affect the options. We assess PETC in the cabin or AVIH in the hold with an accompanying person on the same flight; the operating airline must accept the animal and itinerary. Where an authorised person travels with the pet, we review their authorisation and its connection with the owner’s journey.

Departure from Argentina and first EU entry

The file is prepared for the first EU entry country even if the final city is elsewhere. Argentina is on the EU list exempting non-commercial movement from routine rabies antibody testing; history, stopovers and individual conditions still matter. Do not confuse the 60-day period for certain entries or returns to Argentina with the EU certificate’s ten-day validity until entry checks. This guide covers EU member states only. Finland, Ireland and Malta may require Echinococcus treatment for dogs; the final country must be specified.

Questions before you travel

Answers to common questions about documents, preparation and accompanied travel.

Is an antibody test required from Argentina to the EU?

Argentina is included on the EU exemption list for non-commercial movement, so it is not generally required solely because of Argentine origin. History, connections and current conditions still need review; other countries’ rules are not transferred here.

Can my pet travel immediately after vaccination?

After primary rabies vaccination, the minimum 21-day wait or applicable immunity period must be met. Boosters given without a lapse in validity are assessed differently. Your veterinarian must confirm the dates.

Can my pet return with its EU passport?

It may be used for an eligible return if it correctly records identification and vaccination. Otherwise the relevant health certificate is arranged. SENASA must also confirm the documents needed to leave Argentina.

Can a professional accompany my pet instead of me?

Accompanied options with an authorised person can be assessed. Non-commercial movement requires review of authorisation, no change of ownership, the owner’s travel within the five-day window and the applicable animal-number limit.

Does the 60-day window also apply to EU entry?

No. These periods serve different purposes: SENASA provides 60 days for certain entries or returns to Argentina, while the EU certificate must cover European checks within ten days of issue. Prepare the correct document for each direction.
