Pet travel from Germany to the United States

We plan accompanied travel from Germany to the United States. Before confirming an itinerary, we review CDC dog-entry rules, requirements for cats, the operating airline and the destination state.

In the cabin or aircraft hold

PETC means travel in the cabin; AVIH means travel in the aircraft hold with an accompanying traveller on the same flight. The airline must accept the pet and itinerary.

Documents and preparation for entering the United States

Dogs and cats have different entry requirements. CDC requires dogs to be at least six months old, have a detectable microchip, appear healthy and travel with a CDC Dog Import Form receipt. The procedure depends on every country the dog has visited during the previous six months and where it was vaccinated; departure from the EU alone does not establish eligibility.

For departure from Germany, your veterinarian and, where applicable, the Veterinäramt must check the documents required by the destination. Provide the departure city, countries visited and U.S. arrival state.

  • Consistent identification of the animal, owner and accompanying person across documents and reservations.
  • Dogs: at least six months old, detectable microchip, apparent good health and a CDC Dog Import Form receipt.
  • The dog’s country history for the previous six months and any additional documentation following a stay in a high-risk country for dog rabies.
  • Cats: health checks on arrival and destination-state, territory and airline requirements; the dog import form does not apply.
  • USDA APHIS, destination and departure requirements, a suitable carrier and acceptance by the operating airline.

Dogs and cats: individual preparation

Species, breed, age, health, weight and carrier dimensions affect the options. PETC means travel in the cabin; AVIH means carriage in the conditioned hold on the accompanying traveller’s flight. We propose an option only when the operating airline accepts that animal and itinerary.

Arrival airport and destination state

Provide the arrival airport and state as well as your final city. CDC permission to use an entry point does not mean that every airline accepts pets there. Hawaii and Guam have specific procedures that need a separate assessment; connections and onward transfers are also reviewed.

Questions before you travel

Answers to common questions about documents, preparation and accompanied travel.

Does the six-month minimum age also apply to cats?

The six-month rule described here is a CDC rule for dogs. For cats, we check health requirements, the airline’s minimum age and destination rules; the CDC Dog Import Form does not apply to cats.

Does departure from the EU guarantee the simpler CDC procedure?

No. Every country visited by the dog in the previous six months must be reviewed. A stay in a high-risk country can require a different procedure and additional documents.

Is an EU pet passport sufficient?

Do not assume it is. A dog needs the CDC Dog Import Form receipt and must meet the applicable conditions; the destination state and airline may require additional documents or vaccinations.

Can my pet travel in the cabin or accompanied in the hold?

We assess PETC or AVIH with an accompanying person on the same flight, subject to size, breed, carrier, airline and airport. A passenger reservation does not confirm space for the pet. We do not offer manifest-cargo transport.

Does this guide cover every U.S. city?

Provide your actual city and state. Airport acceptance, connections and the animal’s eligibility are assessed individually. Hawaii and Guam need a specific review, and the map does not confirm a direct flight.
