Pet travel from Spain to South Korea

We plan accompanied travel from Spain to South Korea. Before confirming the itinerary, we review microchip identification, vaccination, rabies antibody testing where required, APQA documentation and airline acceptance.

Documents and preparation for entering South Korea

Dogs and cats must be identified with an ISO microchip and have documentation meeting APQA health conditions. For animals aged 90 days or older, we review a rabies antibody result of at least 0.5 IU/ml from an accepted laboratory within the previous 24 months, unless an exemption applies. EU departure alone does not establish an exemption: the Korean country list and the animal’s history matter. An EU pet passport may replace the official certificate if it contains the required details and endorsements.

For departure from Spain, check the endorsed passport or applicable certificate with your vet and the export authority, including CEXGAN processing. Provide the province, dates and animal’s history.

  • Readable ISO microchip with the same number in the passport, certificates and laboratory report.
  • Rabies vaccination and veterinary schedule checked for the animal, departure country and a possible return.
  • Antibody result of at least 0.5 IU/ml within 24 months where required; confirm age and origin exceptions with APQA.
  • Official export certificate or eligible EU passport recording the results, dates and any required authority endorsement.
  • Declaration and presentation to animal quarantine before customs, an appropriate carrier and airline confirmation of the pet’s space.

Dogs and cats: individual preparation

Species, breed, age, health, weight and carrier dimensions affect the options. PETC means travel in the cabin; AVIH means carriage in the conditioned hold on the accompanying traveller’s flight. We propose an option only when the operating airline accepts that animal and itinerary.

Arrival airport and final destination

Provide the intended airport, final city and all connections. Present your pet and original documents to animal quarantine before customs. Admission is decided by the authority; missing or inadequate documentation or health conditions can lead to detention or return. The map is illustrative and does not confirm a direct flight or acceptance at every airport.

Questions before you travel

Answers to common questions about documents, preparation and accompanied travel.

Does every pet need a rabies antibody test?

It is assessed for dogs and cats aged 90 days or older, with exceptions based on Korea’s origin classification and the animal’s history. The required result is at least 0.5 IU/ml within the 24-month window. Airline minimum ages are checked separately.

Is an EU passport enough?

It may be accepted for dogs and cats from an EU member state if all required information and endorsements are present. We check the departure authority’s procedure; possessing a passport does not mean the file is complete.

Does entry quarantine mean a compulsory stay?

Neither a fixed stay nor automatic release is promised. APQA examines the pet and documents and decides the outcome. An incomplete file can lead to detention, additional measures or return.

Can my pet travel in the cabin or accompanied in the hold?

We assess PETC or AVIH with an accompanying person on the same flight, subject to size, breed, carrier, airline and airport. A passenger reservation does not confirm space for the pet. We do not offer manifest-cargo transport.

Should I prepare for the return too?

Yes. Korea and the EU apply different antibody-testing rules. A favourable test recorded before EU departure can avoid the return waiting period if the relevant conditions remain satisfied. We assess both directions before the first flight.
